When she leaves Neuronetica-Somners that night, it’s dark. They lifted Navin’s empty body out of the pod, arms and legs swinging akimbo, placed it on a stretcher and wheeled it out of the procedure room, through a set of swinging doors at the back, to somewhere Tao-Yi couldn’t follow. Mica gave her a thumbs-up and told her the Uploading went off without a hitch.

Now she huddles in the back seat of the taxi, clutching Navin’s clothes on her lap. Her feed churns with buzzes from Evelyn and Zach and dozens of other friends, asking how it went, how she’s feeling, how he’s feeling. She mutes them all.

The taxi asks her if she’d like some uplifting music. Tao-Yi nods, and an orchestral symphony swells from speakers all around her. She curls her torso forward, so that her nose lands against his T-shirt, which is soft and thin from many wears. She breathes in. Her whole body aches.

A voice message appears on her ReVision.

‘My huŏlóng, I’m here. I don’t know how to describe this to you, but it’s amazing. Log in when you get home, OK? I promised to take you out for dinner.’
